Frequently asked questions

What is SocialCTL?

SocialCTL is a SaaS that gives solo founders and small businesses a virtual social-media team: an AI content calendar, reel & carousel generators, brand kit, scheduler, and publisher — all in one workspace.

Do I need an API key from OpenAI or Anthropic?

No. SocialCTL ships with its own keys. You can optionally bring your own and pick the model per AI activity from the admin panel.

What platforms can I publish to?

Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Facebook, and X (Twitter). Channels are admin-configurable per tenant.

Can I generate real video reels, not slideshows?

Yes. Reels are rendered server-side with Remotion, producing real MP4 files with scenes, music, voice-over, and aspect-correct framing for Reels, YouTube Shorts, and TikTok.

How does the credit system work?

Every action that costs money to run (AI calls, video renders, image generation) costs credits. Your plan grants credits monthly; you can buy one-time top-up packs anytime. Credit costs are visible on the usage dashboard before you click anything.

Can I edit AI-generated reels?

Yes. The embedded video studio lets you edit scenes, text, music, and voice-over visually. You can also describe changes in plain English ("swap the music for something upbeat") and the AI applies them as source patches.

Can I export carousels for offline use?

Yes. Carousels can be downloaded as a ZIP (every slide as PNG plus a caption.txt sidecar) or as a PDF deliverable (cover page plus one slide per page).

Does it work for agencies handling multiple clients?

Yes. SocialCTL is multi-tenant from the ground up — every client gets a fully isolated workspace, brand kit, calendar, and credit balance.

What AI models does it use?

We support Anthropic Claude, OpenAI, OpenRouter (a gateway to Claude, GPT-4o, Llama, Gemini and more), and Google Gemini. Each AI activity (calendar strategy, slot copy, video patches, image generation, project topics) can use a different provider and model.

Can I try it before signing up?

Yes. The /try flow generates a sample calendar without an account. When you sign up, your sample calendar is adopted into your workspace.

How do you handle failed generations?

Credits are automatically refunded for any piece that fails before it ships (queued, generating, failed, or draft states). Pieces that have already published or been scheduled are not refunded because the value has been delivered.

Can admins comp a subscription for a partner or beta user?

Yes. Admins can assign any plan manually (no Stripe round-trip), optionally grant the plan's monthly credits immediately, and the user sees a "Comp · Granted by your admin" badge on their billing page.

What is the AI Studio, and how is it different from a calendar reel?

The AI Studio has two ways to make video, and they are not the same thing. Generate (/app/studio/video) is a chat-driven single-clip maker: you pick an AI model, describe one shot, and get a real MP4 back — its price depends on the model and is shown on the Generate button before you spend. Create a video (/app/studio/create) makes a WHOLE video for you from a topic: it researches, writes a script, records a voice-over, films the scenes and adds captions, from 30 credits for a 10-second video up to 120 for 40 seconds. Calendar reels are the multi-scene edits assembled on the timeline; a Generate clip is a single video you can drop into a reel or post on its own.

Which AI video models can I choose, and what do t2v / i2v / v2v mean?

The model picker lives on Generate (/app/studio/video), not on Create a video. Each model supports one or more modes: t2v is text-to-video (prompt only), i2v is image-to-video (animate a still), and v2v is video-to-video (restyle or extend an existing clip). Models differ in price — the cost of the one you have picked is shown on the Generate button before you spend, so check it there rather than assuming they all cost the same.

How much does making a video cost in credits?

Create a video is from 30 credits for a 10-second video up to 120 for 40 seconds, because a longer video means more scenes to film. Generate is priced per model and the figure is on the button before you press it. For comparison, a full calendar reel is about 30 credits, a carousel about 20, and a static post about 10. Failed generations are refunded automatically, so you only pay for output you keep.

How does the reel timeline editor work?

Every reel opens in a timeline editor with separate video, voice-over, music, and text tracks. You can record a voice-over in the browser, upload your own audio, or generate an AI voice; on-screen safe zones show where captions and stickers will be covered by the platform UI; and five template families give you a consistent look. The output is a real aspect-correct MP4, not a slideshow.

How do client approval links work — does my client need an account?

No login required. You send a private review link (a 48-character unguessable token) and your client opens it in the browser to approve, request changes, or pre-approve a piece — and you can approve everything at once from your side. All media on the link is served through signed URLs, the link expires after 7 days by default, and you can revoke it at any time.

Is the approval link secure, and can I turn a change request into a fix automatically?

Yes. The link carries an unguessable 48-character token, streams media only through signed URLs, defaults to a 7-day expiry, and can be revoked instantly. When a client requests changes, SocialCTL can auto-reroll the piece to address the feedback — up to 3 times per piece at 1 credit each — and a daily digest email keeps you posted on approvals and comments.

What are workspaces, and do brands share credits?

A workspace is one brand. Each workspace keeps its own isolated brand kit, calendar, and content, so switching between brands never mixes voices or logos — ideal for agencies and multi-brand owners. Credits are pooled at the account level, so all your workspaces draw from one shared balance instead of separate wallets.

How does the product catalog and WooCommerce connector work?

From the product studio (at /app/products) you install the WooCommerce connector, which syncs your store products — titles, images, prices — into SocialCTL. You can then generate on-brand posts, carousels, and reels straight from a product, so a catalog change flows into ready-to-schedule content without copy-pasting details by hand.

Which networks can I publish to, and what happens if a post fails?

You can publish to 8 networks: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, TikTok, Threads, Pinterest, and Discord. Scheduled posts are queued and sent automatically by a publish cron; if a network rejects a post or a call times out, the job retries, and anything that still fails is marked failed on the Publishing view so you can fix and requeue it.

Can I run SocialCTL from Claude with MCP?

Yes. SocialCTL ships an MCP server so you can drive it from Claude — compose posts, publish, edit the brand kit, and work with your content calendar through natural-language tool calls. Add the SocialCTL MCP server in your Claude client, authenticate, and Claude can operate your workspace on your behalf.
